Yakima activist, former City Councilman Ron Bonlender dies at age 68

YAKIMA, Wash. — Ron Bonlender, pugnacious Democratic activist, former Yakima City Council member and downtown businessman, died Friday afternoon of an apparent heart attack. He was 68.

Bonlender was found at his home on North Seventh Street at about 3:30 p.m.

Friends said that Bonlender, who was not publicly known to have serious health problems, had worked at his downtown Sub Shop on Friday morning, but came home early because he did not feel well.

Former City Councilwoman Susan Whitman, speaking for the family, said relatives were not expected to immediately issue a statement. Funeral arrangements will likely be announced next week, Whitman said.

The sudden news shocked those in Democratic circles because Bonlender was practically synonymous with local Democratic politics. On Thursday night, he attended candidate forums and was himself running for a county freeholder position.

"Politics was everything to him. He was always taking on a new project," said Yakima County Auditor Corky Mattingly, who served on the county Democratic central committee when Bonlender was elected chairman of the party's 14th Legislative District almost a decade ago.

Mattingly, who noted that the two did not always see eye-to-eye, said Bonlender's election losses and political fights did not diminish his energy for civic engagement and public and community service. He recently hosted City Council candidates on his cable television show and once suggested local Democrats should have their own radio program.

"Nothing slowed Ron down," Mattingly said.

Some have been comparing him to a tea bagger. I agree they are nuts, but this man I believe needs to be talked about a bit more. He should not be grouped with tea baggers as he seems to have despised the G.W.Bush and company regime. I doubt Tea Baggers dislike our former Oligarch and his entourage.
All you out there who have perhaps been audited, as I have, perhaps are reserving judgement..or at least some. I'm not condoning what he did, but when a person is driven really and truthfully crazy by the government, especially the irs, I think there is what might be termed a "black understanding" ( i just made that up)...something done that is distasteful but which you find you have a degree of empathy with, but also which you may not be willing to openly condone. We are all waiting for all the analysts, but perhaps it won't come in this case, as it did with O.J. Simpson, which ruined a whole year of normal television. He'll probably just be pegged a nut and it's over. Meanwhile the IRS continues to threaten individuals who can't afford the types of attorneys that corporations can afford to get them off the hook.
Also, it may be he did other outrageous things we don't know yet that will finally convince us that yes, he was a nut....but, rambling though he may be, I understood most of what he said. So however you add it up, this dude gave his life for what he felt was a cause. I'm certainly glad more people were not hurt.
When I was audited, I came across so maaany other stories, firsthand and otherwise. I think I noticed more because it was happening to me. Let me tell you, aside from what this man did, just taking into consideration what had apparently happened to him....there are other stories much worse as the result of Internal Revenue SErvice actions.

Perhaps I haven't voiced this yet, but The Republicans are to the United States as the "Old Guard" is to the U.S.S.R. Remember all those old fellows in the newsreels in footage from U.S.S.R.? I always thought some of those pics were from the fifties, but they weren't. They were in the 60's and 70's .. maybe even 80s before the change in Russia.

I was having coffee with my old friend Lars that day by Golden Gardens in Seattle, near my apt. when Lars and I saw a group of maybe 14 to 18 people a ways out on the dock. They were all animated and crying. Then we realized they were Russian scientists. They had all been on a somewhat small sailboat - small for the number of people on it. They were crying because they had been frantically listening to the radio: reports of what turned out to be the failed coup, reports from outside the Kremlin, no doubt..These people were crying because they were facing the possibility of not being able to go home again. ButGorbachev returned to power after it and this failed coup helped destabilized the Communist party. Perhaps the coup was the equivalent of our Tea Party know nothings.

This is exactly the same thing we are fighting, I believe. Know nothings who have no greater grace, even if they disagree with our President, than to badge him "Liar", despite Inhofe's patronizing stipulations of what he 'actually meant'. These men in the starched shirts who stay still and refuse to clap, like a group of Nazi soldiers caught in the headlights. There they sit, not clapping, the small minded group who people like racists embrace, the Republican Party... As Bill Mahre quipped, "All Republicans may not be Racist, but if you are a racist, then you are probably a Republican". Does the backstory amount to this? Should we expect a coup from these Tea Party backwoods weed-chewing pretenders in sheepish gentlemen's clothing who never smile unless it's an evil smile, these "Skull and Bones" super secret, spies-in-their-own-minds imitation James Bonds? I would like to see a Bond movie with these cats as the bad guys, and Cheney the evll leader, a movie that was directed and produced more like a documentary, but the story is not over.

I don't know about you but, as Bush went by his gut,..perhaps I go by my own gut when examining photos like these:

I have an acquaintance who is employed by the O'Reilly show and/or FOX as an expert, albeit a Democrat, and highly intelligtent, I'm marginally embarrassed to admit. I believe this person's family is split on the issue, but it's undoubtedly a 'good job'. What I'm curious about now is if they'll ever put my acquaintance on the air with this entity, this woman who quit her last position as Alaskan Governor, who everyone knows inside that McCain is ashamed of, and all his recent blustering to the contrary is political tripe/hype, this woman who has little true knowledge of anything.

Good points?: Controversial. Period. that's about it, i'm afraid, no matter how her Republican defenders or she herself might try to sing her praises like Michael Bolton, pretty but painfully constipated.

Her next book should be : HOW TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF KNOWING EVERYTHING WHILE KNOWING NOTHING. (WITH A FORWARD BY MINNIE MOUSE). (IF DISNEY KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING, THEY'LL 'PICK HER UP'.)

It's as if none of the GOP types realize that the United States needs a smart person right now. That didn't stop them from stealing the election with George W. Bush twice, as is fairly proven by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the June 2006 Rolling Stone, as well as the follow up later that fall.

Juxtapose this to this person we are supposed to accept as 'an important person', this person who is top billing in the news this week, and remember Katrina when it was more in our face, as Bush did nothing except make it worse, putting criminal Blackwater personell on the streets to shoot "looters", people who most likely were just trying to stay alive after a terrible natural disaster. the stories that were buried, OR how Anderson Cooper, CNN ( although I believe CNN to be a FOX clone these days), had to confront the Governor of Louisianna on television to tell her after she said some political bull crap explanation, that he was witnessing as he spoke dead bodies, etc.

Let's raise our glasses to any last shred of courage that might be mustered up in these last moments of the health care fiasco. What part of "They have so much money they can get anything they want done" don't we understand. Before you lash me for giving up, I haven't. I can't stop knowing what our country needs. But if you can't come to terms with real loss, or even the reality of the potential for it, then you're dreaming. I hope obama comes out of his cave and vetoes this. getting it done now is important, even if it means starting from scratch. So much bad can and will occur if we do it the way the spineless Democrats want: 'take this now, then we'll work on it later'. If not one of them stands up, with enough courage to STAY standing up, this time, now, then they'll walk over us.
God knows we have enough ammo to confront the Repugnicons with, after that eight years. And, YES, we DO have the right to remind you of those last eight years of the worst president, with out one doubt, our country has ever had! I say we throw those tomatoes, and keep throwing them every single day. Not once. Not once have the Repugnicons been able to hear the evils their agents have done, without changing the subject. It's because they all live in a completely different reality.

I do acknowledge that we live in a country/world right now where the significance of the term "different world views" is becoming something you can just brush off easily, but instead palpable. We are nearly daily faced with the real animal, not just the legends, the stories. They really exist. And, to them, do we exist? This is what we need to keep reminding them of. I hope I'm not being too cryptic in my expressions here. In this books Thom uses his knowledge and experience and highly diplomatic approach to bridge the divide between families, friends which have developed in our country politically, and has/does threaten to divide families and friends.

Years ago a friend told me they had read somewhere that if we could actually--ACTUALLY-- get into each other's brains, the experience would indeed be like a heavy LSD trip. Whatever buffers have prevented our species, our culture, to NOT have that experience..that which naturally keeps us separate..it seems to me that that envelope has been pushed, so to speak, especially by events the previous 8 year administration's sociopathic reign.

We, on the left, I think, need to learn when to hold it in, but especially when and how to let it out...and not always in a politically correct manner. I know they are out of office now, but my own feelings are that they need to be investigated and prosecuted. More need to speak up like Harry Taylor did to Bush.

It is so much like confronting an angry sociopath. One needs to balance one's truth, one's rhetoric, with a calm demeanor, and consistently. With "Iron" in one's words, as Chief Ten Bears (Will Samson) stated in "The Outlaw Josie Wales". THAT is diplomacy. While this President is in office, the fight is not over. It has only begun.

You show this stuff to any right wing nut jobs, as they all do seem to be, and they shift into 'SPIN ZONE' gear. You know, defensive posture. Out the door is any semblance of one reasonable sober person having a discussion with another. I'm done with acknowledging for the sake of civility and potential growth of thought the concept that the Repugnicons put forth repeatedly that whatever the topic, the Democrats are just as guilty...it's a snow job. The GOP are a group of critters who do not have the genes, do not have the ability to have a civil discussion, being all owned by special interests, in one way or another, and don't make me puke by bringing up Leiberman, that dick. In other words, to me, it's all on them.

There is a behaviour, a particular posture one takes when one 'aims' at coming to an agreement, and acknowledgement of certain realities. When two who perhaps have battled for many years finally realize that in order to move on, they must reassess. It IS on the Repugnicons to fess up to their bad behaviour. For all the Monica Lewinski episodes on the Dem's side, it always makes me laugh to pull up this Democratic Underground page.It is not unrelated to 'show' this in the McCain Palin episode...that they even picked that moronic twit (if it is not redundant to emphasize it in this way) says volumes to an educated mind (I'd like to say "whether the right or the left"..except that my view of the right anymore is one of observing a psychotic individual acting out in public.) Unfortunately, the GOP,the people with money, the people in the pockets of the drug companies and healthcare insurance companies....are using Healthcare as a way to get their way again, given that thierguy didn't get in. Who do you have to be NOT to GET THIS? Unfortunately, the numbers of these non-thinkers are able to vote. To me they are unAmerican in practice, despite that fact that they feel they are right. These are the members of a party who, just for one example, want to do away with abortion but instead of using reason--probably because the members of their group are sadly lacking in intelligence enough to engage artfully enough to make their case--they bomb or worse stay silent or even DO outwardly support killers of abortion doctors.
In the history of the world, disagreements on strong issues have been around since man crawled out of the soup...(but they don't even believe that!--it all started 6000 years ago, according to these bimbos). There is a thing called negotiations.
OK..before you think I'm off the track... my focus here is on the design, from the beginning, of an entity's plan to achieve their goals. I chose abortion not because I'm against it, because I'm not. However, I do believe that this is a good example, to me, of an opinion--Anti-Abortion --that could just possibly be discussed in a rational manner...only if the right people could sit down long enough to discuss it. But perhaps this is an American thing. In my opinion, Europeans could sit down and discuss this in a rational manner and view it from all angles...as perhaps the Greeks would examine things. But just imagining Americans--especially GOP types, doing it is ,well, just laughable. They live in their own reality. You would think that if any of their supposedly passionate desires meant that much to them that they would be motivated to sit down and discuss it with the other side.
THE OBVIOUS: That the GOP are masters at PR. Anyone should be able to see by now that they are magicians, the GOP, masters of the sleight of hand..whatever they are doing in public...rest assured there is another agenda. Usually the same set, however: Money. Power. Winning.
Meanwhile, the rest of us, in the real reality, see the ozone layer being screwed up, wars being waged at the expense of some American lives and logarithmically more of foreign humans who are not only innocent, but more than likely, people of so much richer character than the ones who planned and executed these wars..people like Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld.
With Healthcare: it's all out there, we've been watching it. The GOP have many convinced--but we must define what the word convinced means. There IS a thing that can be named mass hypnotism. The real Capitol of the US has been Hollywood. I met a very nice young doctor from Finland years ago who told me her most vivid impression of America was it's television ads. She told me, "It amazes me that the commercials speak to the citizens as if they are 2 years old". I've never forgotten that. If you talk to the majority of people as if they are 2 years old--over an otherwise amazing machine like the television--for decades and generations, is it any wonder that their minds turn to mush and can be convinced of anything? Convinced to vote for a moron like Sarah Palin...who could have been President if McCain won and then passed away. Convinced that weapons of mass destruction are there from a guy who looks like a good old boy, like their friendly neighbor who believes in their God. Convinced of anything through simple association,..convinced of anything based on vague associations. These are hypnotists' techniques.

Dear Yakima Valley Progressive masses. I'm a little down on myself tonight. For not standing up with the very few folks who, of course, faced ridicule from the clap-happy Republican majority here in River-City who have been hypnotized into thinking they really believe in bi-partisan answers to the health-care issue. (Like Bush would have allowed anything like that, eh?)

But after 25 years living in Seattle, I guess I should not be too hard on myself. I truthfully wanted to see what we're up against, feel me? Mind Fog. Still here. Not mine. I want to thank those who spoke up for a public option at the microphone--I believe the first of which is Richard,...let that be all for now. I think maybe three followed him as the evening wore on, amidst lemming-claps.

--The State Senators presented a plan, without hand-outs, then took questions. Many folks thanked them for their presentation, and spoke on some of the plans like Health Savings Accounts and the specifics of these ideas, blatantly ignoring even the hint of considering the public option as something in their reality. Translation: Me thinkee Socialized Medicine makee wee into Nazi country...scaree. Forgetting too that we rank 37th in the world. --

Regarding that 37th in the World fact from the World Health Organization--( http://www.who.int/whr/2000/media_centre/press_release/en/index.html ) Bill Hinkle must have some reallly HOT sources. He stated as fact that this rating from the World Health Organization is not true. I guess Cle Elum's got a GOP think-tank. Who knew?!

A few physicians..I think three...spoke mostly against Medicare and more special topics..including tort reform, one droned on so long I really couldn't follow her complaint, except that it involved some pet peeve against Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. If they have their way on the tort reform, perhaps my physician will have the freedom to do my operation after three or four Mint Juleps or Bloody Mary's more accurately if my name was Mary. Y'gotta loosen up, right? It probably does need looking into, but NOT with the rampant pre-conceived , "abortion issue" manner in which Republicans do almost everything. There's no room for negotiation with them. Never has been.

For the record, here's what I would have uttered at the microphone at the Yakima Convention Center on September 22, 2009--maybe I should've had a drink before.....( children, don't take that as license!)

What are you doing to make me, as a citizen, and as a 28 year veteran Seattle RN who understands baloney PR when I hear it, --what are you doing to make me put more trust in a Corporate-run, profit driven executive policy that determines my health care coverage, that is, the way it is now --- than an open, ..and to quote Wendell Potter himself, “an accountable, publicly accountable health care option..” ..one where people who CAN be held accountable, make coverage decisions, AND are NOT profit motivated?

Whatever drivel may have slipped from their mouths in response to my question, the question would remain in the rhetorical category. Unanswered. I should have asked it. However, given the audience, the experience was beneficial in taking the local temperature…rectally, in a way. I noticed that when the few courageous locals who have some common sense about the true state-of-affairs regarding health-care spoke, quite a number of Yakimaniacs “jumped” as if someone had stuck a glass thermometer into the sphyncter muscle that we normally cannot see without mirrors.

Full disclosure: before I stepped from the mic, after listening to the local doctors who are against "government-run health-care", I'd decided that I would add:

As a nurse of 28 years, I've learned by now not to trust that every smiley-faced physician who has developed that "you-can-trust-me" face has as full a grip on all reality as they think they do. They never seem to remember that they are only one physician. There is a need in their lives...a valid need...to BE like that because they DO have a difficult job to do and require that kind of trust to do it well. With all that in mind, then WHY has the AMA in September been polled at 63% favoring a choice including both the public option and private insurance.

New Blog Meeting place for Progressive Yakimaniacs

Welcome. My name is Dan Thomas. I have moved back to Yakima from Seattle after about 25 years. Except for
the Yakima Herald-Republic newspaper's editorials and letters to the editor, my sense is that there is a need for
a venue for Progressive thought. I know there are Progressive thinkers in the Valley and Central Washington in general, but if there is a place or way they bond, it has escaped me.
In the 60's and 70's, my "formative" years, my pals and I would always joke about the "mind fog" that enveloped us if we were driving or hitch-hiking back from Seattle to Yakima. It was palpable. We had all grown up here. While The Valley is made up of multitudes of sincere, hard-working folks, the effects of changes in the world have escaped many of them. I guess some explanation like this is what caused the mind-fog. As an RN who has worked a significant portion of my career in Behavioral or Mental Health, I still struggle to explain the "mind-fog".
Yakima's "mind-fog" may not be unique. Perhaps my motivation in starting this blog is my underlying belief that the
division in our whole country right now, is somehow that same phenomenon at work.
I do have my own views, but I don't know everything, so I invite primarily folks from the Yakima Valley, Central Washington in general, or anyone who has vested interest in The Valley to contribute their thinking to any contributions made.
Focus on National Issues from contributors is welcomed primarily, and I urge everyone to be helpful...myself included. I can get passionate about certain topics, and I hope you do to0, but change won't happen until we stop and take a bird's eye view. I guess I mean that when you realize you are talking to a rock, stop...so I'm being a bit cryptic to those who don't get it! Some National topics could include local events, too. I may redefine this focus as time goes by.
This is my first blog, if you haven't guessed by now.
Issues that get my mind going are right now: #1!: HEALTHCARE ( of course ), ...others in no particular order are Legalizing all drugs--please check out LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST PROHIBITION At: www.leap.cc/cms/index.php , the fact that the Republican ('t) Party has been taken over by an elite group of power hungry rich in the pockets of lobbyists of all kinds who just want things to stay the same at all costs, how in God?'s name ( question mark intended) the GOP chose a nit-wit like Sarah Palin for the VP...
There are many more issues, but one thing in particluar I would like anyone even vaguely interested in coming back here to explore for themselves is a radio talk show host named Thom Hartmann who is way too hip to be considered for a local station. I sometimes choose to get Thom on iTunes, as well. From his site you will find archives and options for hearing/seeing his show live. In my opinion,Thom Hartmann is without doubt one of the smartest men in America, having written books on Thomas Jefferson ("What would Jefferson Do?"),"Cracking the Code: How to Win Hearts, Change Minds, and Restore America's Original Vision", "ADD, a different Perspective", "Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight", a very provocative look at not only oil, but many of our addictions we may be unaware of, co-writer on a very thorough book about the assassination of JFK, ...I suggest you visit his site for a complete run down on his myriad accomplishments. His most recent book is called "THRESHHOLD, the Crisis of Western Culture". This is only a sampling of his books. Does he ever sleep? I wonder that all the time.

Thom broadcasts from 9 to 12 our time, Pacific, every weekday. He has call in's, takes emails, has a live blog going on as he speaks/interviews, etc..he interviews exceptional people from both sides...unlike Druggie Limbaugh who screens his calls mostly to avoid real discussions, and thus 'dumbing down America'.

Of particular note is the first hour on Friday when he has Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont, an Independent, who is without doubt one of the most Progressive thinkers we have.
Thom is perhaps the most intelligent radio talk show host in the USA right now, at least on the left and, just saying that implies the whole USA.
